INTRODUCTION:
Picture it, we now live in a lifetime where people are able to live in outer space. Planets and space colonies are now able to provide life forms with oxygen, food, schools, entertainment, and anything else that humans would need to survive. Your goal with the "Life in Space" language arts mission is to learn as much as you can about the setting of outer space and what new inhabitants and travelers would experience if they made the decision to venture to this new setting. The following are short descriptions of each task you will be completing: Tasks 1-3: View a video and read four science fiction texts relating to outer space settings. Then, take notes on the setting described by each author of the science fiction stories. Task 4: WIth a partner, create a multimedia presentation using Glogster software. You will inform readers what they could expect if they decided to visit another planet or space colony using what you have learned from the science fiction discussed in this lesson. Task 5: Independently write an essay comparing and contrasting the settings discussed in at least two of the science fiction texts you read. I will be grading both the multimedia presentation and essay using two separate rubrics I have provided along with this "Life in Space" unit. Overall, you will be reading science fiction texts and applying your knowledge of specific details of the setting in order to create a multimedia presentation and to prepare you to write an informative compare/contrast essay. Now that you have been introduced to your mission, I wish you the best of luck... or in outer space terms... "May the Force Be With You" and "Live Long and Prosper." -Mrs. Biskach |
TASK 1:
INTERPLANET JANET Cue Set
In order to complete the "Life in Space" Language Arts activity, begin by watching this short video reviewing the planets in outer space. Interplanet Janet will give a brief overview on each planet. It is your mission to jot down examples of setting you hear and see regarding the planets on the notecard I have provided you. Be sure to write the name of the planet, as well as a description of what it entails. You may complete this activity with at least three planets being described on your notecard.
This introductory task, and all the activities that follow, will prepare you for the final goals of assessment: an essay you will write on outer space settings and a multimedia advertisement project you will create in order to explain/ inform readers on what they would experience if they decided to take a trip to a particular planet or space colony.

TASK 2:
LITERATURE REVIEW--"All Summer in a Day"
For task 2 of the "Life in Space" mission, take this time to review the science fiction text we previously read, "All Summer in a Day." Remember, it was about the main character Margot recently moving to the planet Venus. Margot would constantly compare and contrast the setting on Earth and the setting on the planet she now lives on, Venus. Due to this, she was bullied by her new classmates. As you turn to pages 64-70 in the anthology, complete the "All Summer in a Day" close read questions and graphic organizer below.
You may open the graphic organizer through the Microsoft Word "download file" link I have provided below. Then, type in at least five examples of the setting with Margot's description of Venus (include the page number to help you refer back to it). You must provide the text evidence (quote) that describes the setting. Finally, you must also write your own, personal description of what the setting is using the quote you extracted from the text. To help you, think of the imagery that comes to your mind when you read the text evidence you decide upon.

Once you have finished the part 2 close read questions and graphic organizer, raise your hand so that Mrs. Biskach may review your answers. Once she has given you the okay, you may work with your partner (the same partner you were assigned to by Mrs. Biskach earlier in class) in order to complete the following part 3.
TASK 3:
SCIENCE FICTION TEXTS #1-3--"Weather That's Out of This World," "Space Settlements," and "Space Colony"
As stated before, the final goal of the "Life in Space" mission is to create a multimedia advertisement. You will use details about the setting from "All Summer in a Day," as well as from the following three texts that you will read and analyze with your partner. Below, I have provided you a Space Texts Partner Packet (open the Word document by clicking "document file").
With your partner, you will read the short texts I have bulleted and complete the partner packet. Much like you did with the "All Summer in a Day" graphic organizer, you may type your answers and print out this document in order to help you with your multimedia project.
Although you will be working with your partner, each student must complete their own partner packet. This is to insure all students have accountability with the assignment and that you will also be able to complete the final independent portion of the Language Arts activities, the compare and contrast essay reflection in part 5.
When you have completed part 3, raise your hand to get the 'okay' from Mrs. Biskach in order to move on to part 4. You must complete all elements of the partner packet before you can begin your advertisement project.
