Activity
Task #1
We can use our Interactive Notebooks to collect data about the moon. Open your Interactive Notebook to page 45. This page should be blank! We will use the blank Monthly Moon Phase calendar located on the documents page to illustrate the phases of the moon for the month of November. Print the blank Monthly Moon Phase calendar for the month of November, then paste it into your Interactive Notebook on page 45.
We will use the Moon Phase Data Collection Worksheets to make our connections between percentages, fractions and decimals for each day of November. Print 5 Moon Phase Data Collection Worksheets from the Resource Page and paste one of each sheet on pages 46, 47, 48, 49, and 50 of your Interactive Notebook.
Task #2
Lets take a look at a resource we will use to view, collect and display data about the moon’s phases.
First, go to http://farmersalmanac.com/calendar/moon-phases/.
Examine this web page. What information can you gather from this web page about the moon’s phases? Discuss what information you can gather from this web page with your partner and record your thoughts in your Interactive Notebook on page 46.
Lets take a look at a resource we can use to display the data we collect. You are already familiar with making digital graphs using this website.
Go to http://www.onlinecharttool.com/.
We can use this website to make a graph of the moon phase’s percentages as they are displayed on http://farmersalmanac.com/calendar/moon-phases/
Task #3
Now that you are familiar with the tools you will be using to collect information about the moon’s phases, lets get to work! Shade in your blank Moon Phase Calendar located on page 45 using the data available on http://farmersalmanac.com/calendar/moon-phases/.
Now use this information to record the percentages for each day of the month onto your Moon Phase Data Collection Worksheet located on pages 46, 47, 48, 49 and 50. Complete your Moon Phase Data Collection Worksheets recording how these percentages can be represented as fractions and decimals.
Task #4
Your completed Moon Phase Data Collection Worksheets and Monthly Moon Phase Calendar provide good examples of a visual representation of the moon’s phases. Now, lets take a look at how we can display these phases or changes using a graph. Using the percentages you have recorded in your Interactive Notebook, construct a bar or line graph that shows the Percentage of Full for each day of the month of October. You can decide which form of graph will display the data the best.
Use www.onlinecharttool.com/ to construct your graph.
After you have completed your graph, print your graph in color and in landscape form, then paste into your Interactive Notebook on page 51.
Task #5
Final Product
Working together with your assigned partner, use http://scratch.mit.edu/ to create a video that will teach your friends about the phase of the moon and how these phases can be represented using percentages, fractions and decimals. A rubric is located in the documents section of this assignment that will help guide you in the successful completion of this product. Good luck!
